Thorough, enjoyable, effective, personalised, affordable, modern and friendly tuition.
Without doubt the best way to advance your guitar playing is to have one on one tuition with an experienced tutor....
I have played acoustic, electric and bass guitar for 30 years now and have taught all ages and ability levels; privately, and in secondary and further education. I’m confident that I can make you a better guitar player whether you’ve been playing for 5 minutes or 5 years.
I am based in the Stoke area of Plymouth and teach from my home studio there; whilst I don't tend to do many home visits these days due to time constraints if you'd prefer that please get in touch and I'll do my best.
Staring with the basics, we’ll cover the essentials of tuning, open position chords and basic scales and techniques.
From there it’s up to you really..... rather than just work our way through a book week after week I prefer to tailor a course to your requirements.
I recommend and teach the Rockschool syllabus because I believe it offers a broad range of modern music styles while covering all of the nuts and bolts required to become a good player; I'm also a Rockschool lecturer and it integrates with college study and is QCF accredited.
Unlike many courses there are no nursery rhymes, no cartoon drawings and no confusing diagrams, but there is a wide range of good tunes specifically designed for electric, acoustic or bass guitar with CD backing tracks and an emphasis on improvisation from Grade 3 upwards.
Subjects covered typically include....
Basics such as the anatomy, setup and the care & feeding of your guitar, tuning, open position chords and scales, basic melodies, strumming patterns, popular riffs and fingerpicking.
Left hand techniques; warm ups & stretches, building strength & stamina, accurate string bending, building speed and developing your style, studying your favourite players.
Scales & chords and how they are related, looking at scales in patterns and linear formats, 1,2 & 3 octave scales, bar chords, suspended, combined, altered and power chords.
Right hand techniques; playing with a pick as well as with your fingers, arpeggiating chords, economy & alternate picking, two handed tapping, chordal tapping, tremolo techniques.
Improvisation; learning how to solo over a piece of music & learning how to write riffs, create songs, record them and layer instrumentation.
Theory from scales and chords to modes, arpeggios, diverse rhythms & styles, music transcription, equipment, music technology, live performance and working within a group.
And most importantly, whatever you want to learn !
